Nehemiah 2:7-8 King James Version (KJV)
7 Moreover I said unto the king, If it please the king, let letters be given me to the governors beyond the river, that they may convey me over till I come into Judah;
8 And a letter unto Asaph the keeper of the king's forest, that he may give me timber to make beams for the gates of the palace which appertained to the house, and for the wall of the city, and for the house that I shall enter into. And the king granted me, according to the good hand of my God upon me.

7 Moreover, I said unto the king, If it pleases the king, let letters be given me to the captains on the other side of the river, that they may convey me over until I come into Judah,
8 and a letter unto Asaph, the keeper of the king’s forest, that he may give me timber to make beams for the gates of the palace of the house and for the wall of the city and for the house that I shall enter into. And the king granted me, according to the good hand of the LORD upon me.

These are my thoughts, please share yours.
7 He is not sucking up to the king but showing respect while asking the king, there is a level of respect when we ask people things we should show respect and not ask as if we are owed something. He wanted permission, he knew without the king this could not but done then but he knew that the Lord wanted it to be done.
8 Wood would be needed for just about any type of building. So he was asking for the king to give him wood from his personal forest and he gets permission, this is God working.
