Matthew 23:37-39King James Version (KJV)
37 O Jerusalem, Jerusalem, thou that killest the prophets, and stonest them which are sent unto thee, how often would I have gathered thy children together, even as a hen gathereth her chickens under her wings, and ye would not!
38 Behold, your house is left unto you desolate.
39 For I say unto you, Ye shall not see me henceforth, till ye shall say, Blessed is he that cometh in the name of the Lord.
Matthew 23:37-39Amplified Bible (AMP)
37 O Jerusalem, Jerusalem, murdering the prophets and stoning those who are sent to you! How often would I have gathered your children together as a mother fowl gathers her brood under her wings, and you refused!
38 Behold, your house is forsaken and desolate (abandoned and left destitute of God’s help).
39 For I declare to you, you will not see Me again until you say, Blessed (magnified in worship, adored, and exalted) is He Who comes in the name of the Lord!

37 Jesus is referring here to the people of the city, cities do not kill people, but the people who live in the city do. Jerusalem often times killed the men of God because they did not want to hear His message from them; this is one reason why they killed Jesus and the apostles. This shows compassion. Jesus wanted to prevent them from doing wrong, wanted to protect them from the influences that lead them to the ways of sin, often times this was outside influence that caused sin. They did what they wanted; this is rarely what God wants.
38-39 They rejected Him many would not hear from Him again and many would not see Him again because He would soon be put to death, many would not see Him again until they face judgment, Jesus came because it was God’s will. He had God’s message, thru Him we go to the Father.
