Matthew 23:33-36King James Version (KJV)
33 Ye serpents, ye generation of vipers, how can ye escape the damnation of hell?
34 Wherefore, behold, I send unto you prophets, and wise men, and scribes: and some of them ye shall kill and crucify; and some of them shall ye scourge in your synagogues, and persecute them from city to city:
35 That upon you may come all the righteous blood shed upon the earth, from the blood of righteous Abel unto the blood of Zacharias son of Barachias, whom ye slew between the temple and the altar.
36 Verily I say unto you, All these things shall come upon this generation.
Matthew 23:33-36World English Bible (WEB)
33 You serpents, you offspring of vipers, how will you escape the judgment of Gehenna ? 34 Therefore behold, I send to you prophets, wise men, and scribes. Some of them you will kill and crucify; and some of them you will scourge in your synagogues, and persecute from city to city; 35 that on you may come all the righteous blood shed on the earth, from the blood of righteous Abel to the blood of Zachariah son of Barachiah, whom you killed between the sanctuary and the altar. 36 Most certainly I tell you, all these things will come upon this generation.

33 This is something John the Baptist called the Pharisees as well. May have referred to the serpent in the garden being deceitful, which is something they had been doing, they tried to keep others from the truth any lead them in ways of lies which is what Satan did as the snake in the garden. Without Christ all will go to hell, He made a way to spare us it is by Him, we have to serve Him to live those who reject Him for who is will go to hell.
34 This refers to those they had killed but they personally would kill those who were called by God first with John then Jesus then Stephen and James and then many others would die for the truth, the gospel. All the disciples would face death penalties some in different ways some would indeed be put on a cross; tradition says both Peter and Andrew died on a cross. History teaches at one time over three hundred followers of Jesus were crucified.
35 Abel was killed because of worship his offering was accepted and his brother’s was not and he killed him, Abel did right thru worship and died for it. Zechariah’s death showed just how far they had fallen; they killed a prophet of God within the temple and the parts that were reserved for priests.
36 The temple would during their life time and many Jews would face the wrath of Rome years later, this may have been just a small part of how God planned for them to deal with these sins.
