Matthew 23:13-15
King James Version (KJV)
13 But woe unto you, scribes and Pharisees, hypocrites! for ye shut up the kingdom of heaven against men: for ye neither go in yourselves, neither suffer ye them that are entering to go in.
14 Woe unto you, scribes and Pharisees, hypocrites! for ye devour widows' houses, and for a pretence make long prayer: therefore ye shall receive the greater damnation.
15 Woe unto you, scribes and Pharisees, hypocrites! for ye compass sea and land to make one proselyte, and when he is made, ye make him twofold more the child of hell than yourselves.
The Recovery Version of the Bible
Matthew 23:13 — Matthew 23:15
13 But woe to you, scribes and Pharisees, hypocrites! For you close off the kingdom of the heavens in the face of men; for you do not enter in yourselves, nor do you allow those who are entering to enter.
14 But woe to you, scribes and Pharisees, hypocrites! For you devour the widows' houses, even while for a pretense you make long prayers. For this reason you shall receive greater judgment.
15 Woe to you, scribes and Pharisees, hypocrites! For you go about the sea and the dry land to make one proselyte; and when he becomes one, you make him twice as much a son of Gehenna as yourselves.

13 Jesus warned the Pharisees many times, this is one reason they hated Him. People do not want to hear they have been doing things wrong. Hypocrite means actor so they say something and act a different way or they put on a show and do not do these thing in private. The Pharisees put conditions on going to heaven that no one could live up to. The Pharisees lived by their conditions in public but not in private. Today people claim you have to do certain things to go to heaven, He did it all you just need to let Him be who He is in your life, Lord.
14 The Pharisees took advantage of people. They looked at what they could get and did not look at who they hurt to get it. The church today can be more concerned with other things and often times people suffer because of this but we need to focus on the things of God and everything will go according to His plan. The Pharisees did things to be seen and not to please God. We should not things to please God and not to please man.
15 These people Jesus refers to the Pharisees looking for are devoting Jews coming to feast of Pentecost. We can search for devote Christians to fulfill a role and miss out that God has somebody in our place already to take the job. Pharisees overlooked many people because they did not feel they were worthy to be a Pharisee.
