1 Chronicles 28:17-19 King James Version (KJV)
17 Also pure gold for the fleshhooks, and the bowls, and the cups: and for the golden basons he gave gold by weight for every bason; and likewise silver by weight for every bason of silver:
18 And for the altar of incense refined gold by weight; and gold for the pattern of the chariot of the cherubims, that spread out their wings, and covered the ark of the covenant of the Lord.
19 All this, said David, the Lord made me understand in writing by his hand upon me, even all the works of this pattern.

He told ·how much [the weight of] silver to use to make each silver ·dish [bowl] 18 and ·how much [the weight of] pure gold to use for the altar of incense. He also gave Solomon the plans for the ·chariot [or seat] of the ·golden creatures [cherubim] that spread their wings over the Ark of the ·Agreement [Testimony; Treaty; Covenant] with the Lord.

17-18 So we see David giving out the finally plans for the temple and all that it needs to Solomon.
19 We see how all these plans were given to David from God, which meant that even though God wasnt going to allow him to build the temple God was going to allow David to have a role in the building by preparing. We always have a role with the Lord, it may just not be what we want.
