1 Chronicles 26:12-19 King James Version (KJV)
12 Among these were the divisions of the porters, even among the chief men, having wards one against another, to minister in the house of the LORD.
13 And they cast lots, as well the small as the great, according to the house of their fathers, for every gate.
14 And the lot eastward fell to Shelemiah. Then for Zechariah his son, a wise counsellor, they cast lots; and his lot came out northward.
15 To Obededom southward; and to his sons the house of Asuppim.
16 To Shuppim and Hosah the lot came forth westward, with the gate Shallecheth, by the causeway of the going up, ward against ward.
17 Eastward were six Levites, northward four a day, southward four a day, and toward Asuppim two and two.
18 At Parbar westward, four at the causeway, and two at Parbar.
19 These are the divisions of the porters among the sons of Kore, and among the sons of Merari.
1 Chronicles 26:12-19 Expanded Bible (EXB)
12 These were the leaders of the •groups [divisions; orders] of gatekeepers, and they served in the •Temple [L house] of the LORD, as did their •relatives [brothers]. 13 By throwing lots, each •family [clan]chose a gate to guard. •Young [Small]and •old [great] threw lots.
14 •Meshelemiah [or Shelemiah; v. 2]was chosen by lot to guard the East Gate. Then lots were •thrown [cast]for Meshelemiah’s son Zechariah. He was a •wise counselor [prudent advisor] and was chosen for the North Gate. 15 Obed-Edom was •chosen for [allotted] the South Gate, and Obed-Edom’s sons were •chosen to guard [allotted] the storehouse. 16 Shuppim and Hosah were chosen for the West Gate and the Shalleketh Gate on the •upper [ascending] road [C to the Temple].
•Guards stood side by side with guards [or Guard duty was evenly divided; L A guard alongside a guard]. 17 Six Levites stood guard every day at the East Gate; four stood guard every day at the North Gate; four stood guard every day at the South Gate; and two at a time guarded the storehouse. 18 There were two guards at the •western court [colonnade; Parbar; C the gateway leading up to the Temple] and four guards on the road.
19 These were the •groups [divisions; orders] of the gatekeepers from the •families [clans; L sons] of Korah and Merari.

12-13 they chose the temple workers by casting lots this was a very common practice to help let the Lord decide who was to be chosen. I don’t know if God chose from casting lots but He defiantly worked with what was chosen by the lots. They were deciding which gates they were to guard. Some gates would have been favored over others and some people may have been favored over others so they cast lots to decide.
14-16 East gate was chosen first. Then the north gate which went to a wise advisor. Then the south gate which went to the store house. Then there was the western court which they had put two to guard it because that path went to the temple. This shows that the temple is more important then the store house. What we pour out to God is more important then what we have in the bank.
17-18 They guarded this was big responsibility and they made the most of their duty. So now the amount that guards at a time is decided from the family that casted lots each being of the same family except the western which would have been two different guarding it.
19 These would have all been of the sons of Korah, they went weren’t high priests but were meant to serve God. We may not be called to pastor but we are to serve the Lord.
