8 And they cast lots, ward against ward, as well the small as the great, the teacher as the scholar.
9 Now the first lot came forth for Asaph to Joseph: the second to Gedaliah, who with his brethren and sons were twelve:
10 The third to Zaccur, he, his sons, and his brethren, were twelve:
11 The fourth to Izri, he, his sons, and his brethren, were twelve:
12 The fifth to Nethaniah, he, his sons, and his brethren, were twelve:

8 Everyone threw lots •to choose the time his family was to serve at the Temple [for their duties]. The •young [small] and the •old [great], the teacher and the student, had to throw lots.
9 First, the lot fell to Joseph, from the •family [clan] of Asaph [C the number twelve needs to be understood here, as in the following verses, to make the total come to the stated 288].
Second, twelve men were chosen from Gedaliah, his sons and •relatives [kinsmen; L brothers].
10 Third, twelve men were chosen from Zaccur, his sons and •relatives [kinsmen; L brothers].

These are my thoughts, please share yours.
Again it was decided by lots, this being the way they saw how God chose, they did this form of choosing for some reason rather then to ask the prophet of that time that the Lord provided. The Levites all served the Lord; they lived not by caring for their land but by living for the Lord and serving the Lord. Every one of them had a purpose; even small children of the Levites could help and were trained up in the service of the Lord. This is good but teaching them who God truly is and helping them to fellowship with Him is far more important then teaching them to serve. These are the list of men who served the Lord, the list of Levites and the families.
