1 Chronicles 24:1-3 King James Version (KJV)
24 Now these are the divisions of the sons of Aaron. The sons of Aaron; Nadab, and Abihu, Eleazar, and Ithamar.
2 But Nadab and Abihu died before their father, and had no children: therefore Eleazar and Ithamar executed the priest's office.
3 And David distributed them, both Zadok of the sons of Eleazar, and Ahimelech of the sons of Ithamar, according to their offices in their service.
1 Chronicles 24:1-3 Expanded Bible (EXB)
The Groups of the Priests
24 These were the •groups [divisions; orders] of Aaron’s sons: Aaron’s sons were Nadab, Abihu, Eleazar, and Ithamar. 2 But Nadab and Abihu died before their father did [Lev. 10:1–2], and they had no sons. So Eleazar and Ithamar served as the priests. 3 David, with the help of Zadok, a descendant of Eleazar, and Ahimelech, •a descendant of Ithamar, separated their [C Aaron’s] •family groups [descendants] into two different groups according to their •various duties [assigned responsibilities/offices].

1 These would be the high priests. Aaron’s line was the ones who offered up sacrifices for the people. All the Levites served as priest but only the sons of Aaron were high priests, the other Levites have other duties of service.
2 So there were only two lines of priests that carried on. All the high priests came thru this line. We as Christians have Jesus as a high priest but He isn’t a Levite.
3 David was asking the priests of the Lord for help. So now the divisions in duties are made thru the high priests. Division of duties helps often to allow more focus on duties.
