Matthew 26:65-68 King James Version (KJV)
65 Then the high priest rent his clothes, saying, He hath spoken blasphemy; what further need have we of witnesses? behold, now ye have heard his blasphemy.
66 What think ye? They answered and said, He is guilty of death.
67 Then did they spit in his face, and buffeted him; and others smote him with the palms of their hands,
68 Saying, Prophesy unto us, thou Christ, Who is he that smote thee?
Matthew 26:65-68Young's Literal Translation (YLT)
65 Then the chief priest rent his garments, saying, -- `He hath spoken evil; what need have we yet of witnesses? lo, now ye heard his evil speaking;
66 what think ye?' and they answering said, `He is worthy of death.'
67 Then did they spit in his face and buffet him, and others did slap,
68 saying, `Declare to us, O Christ, who he is that struck thee?'
These are my thoughts, please share yours.
65 The high priest was never to rip his clothes they were holy but at this point they are breaking the laws of God to convict Him any way. Blasphemy was to claim being God but Jesus already proved who He is no more evidence would prove it to them, this is a place that we should hope the lost never get to but sadly many do.
66 Death by stoning was typically done for this but it was the holy week so they would be unclean to serve so they had to keep their hands clean or as they would do have the Romans put Him to death.
67 So they beat Him up, this was not the conviction they just did this because they wanted to out of hate, they had a hate for Jesus and this world like wise will hate us.
68 They had Him blindfolded which was very odd for a trial but they were mocking Him.
