Matthew 26:57-59 King James Version (KJV)
57 And they that had laid hold on Jesus led him away to Caiaphas the high priest, where the scribes and the elders were assembled.
58 But Peter followed him afar off unto the high priest's palace, and went in, and sat with the servants, to see the end.
59 Now the chief priests, and elders, and all the council, sought false witness against Jesus, to put him to death;
Matthew 26:57-59 Young's Literal Translation (YLT)
57 And those laying hold on Jesus led [him] away unto Caiaphas the chief priest, where the scribes and the elders were gathered together,
58 and Peter was following him afar off, unto the court of the chief priest, and having gone in within, he was sitting with the officers, to see the end.
59 And the chief priests, and the elders, and all the council, were seeking false witness against Jesus, that they might put him to death,

57 Caiaphas was not to be met with at night but was to have these meetings during the day and they were to be open. They were probably hand picked who came to the meeting. They never met at night one reason was because they were wanting to convict Jesus and they had those there who would.
58 Peter keeps an eye on what is happening although Jesus told him what was to happen it is not meaning Peter did this out of doubt but more because he did not know what to do other then keep following Jesus.
59 False witnesses was against Jewish law so they are breaking the law they claim they hold so dear to bring down Jesus who alone has kept the law in full. People of this world may lie against us to bring us down.
