1 Chronicles 21:5-8 King James Version (KJV)
5 And Joab gave the sum of the number of the people unto David. And all they of Israel were a thousand thousand and an hundred thousand men that drew sword: and Judah was four hundred threescore and ten thousand men that drew sword.
6 But Levi and Benjamin counted he not among them: for the king's word was abominable to Joab.
7 And God was displeased with this thing; therefore he smote Israel.
8 And David said unto God, I have sinned greatly, because I have done this thing: but now, I beseech thee, do away the iniquity of thy servant; for I have done very foolishly.

6 Among these the Levites and the sons of Benjamin were not counted, for the king’s word was abominable to Joab.
7 ¶ And God was also displeased with this word; therefore, he smote Israel.
8 And David said unto God, I have sinned greatly because I have done this thing; but now, I beseech thee, take away the iniquity of thy slave, for I have done very foolishly.

These are my thoughts, please share yours.
5 This was a very large number of people; this was a large army for even in those days. The greatest thing for their military was not their number but God, who stood behind them, it does not matter how many people are on our side if we are standing against God.
6 The Levites would not do battle but keep their focus on serving the Lord, the Benjaminites may not have seen David as king because they were of the family of Saul, they may have been unrulely.
7 What David did should not have been done, he started trusting in his own men rather then trusting in the Lord and the Lord showed him that the numbers did not matter because David did evil against God.
8 David instantly knew that he sinned and repented. We often times have a habit of sinning but not repenting making excuses of why we sinned or blaming someone else, David was tempted by Satan to do this but took the blame for his own actions he did not blame Satan.
