1 Chronicles 21:1-4 King James Version (KJV)
21 And Satan stood up against Israel, and provoked David to number Israel.
2 And David said to Joab and to the rulers of the people, Go, number Israel from Beersheba even to Dan; and bring the number of them to me, that I may know it.
3 And Joab answered, The LORD make his people an hundred times so many more as they be: but, my lord the king, are they not all my lord's servants? why then doth my lord require this thing? why will he be a cause of trespass to Israel?
4 Nevertheless the king's word prevailed against Joab. Wherefore Joab departed, and went throughout all Israel, and came to Jerusalem.

21 ¶ And Satan stood up against Israel and provoked David to number Israel.
2 And David said to Joab and to the princes of the people, Go, number Israel from Beersheba even to Dan; and bring the number of them to me, that I may know it.
3 And Joab answered, The LORD make his people a hundred times as many more as they are; but, my lord the king, are they not all my lord’s slaves? Why then does my lord require this thing? Why will he be a cause of guiltiness unto Israel?
4 Nevertheless, the king’s word prevailed against Joab. Therefore, Joab departed and went throughout all Israel and came to Jerusalem.

These are my thoughts, please share yours.
1 David was tempted by Satan this was the start to cause him to fall into sin, Satan has not changed he wants to tempt us and starts with something that may seem little.
2 So he commands this to be done falling into the trap Satan laid down for him, we often have this happen with us where we fall into Satan’s trap.
3 Joab was trying to advice David in what was right, often times before we fall to sin God will send people our way to show us what we are doing is something that we do not need to do. Joab was telling David that the Lord would provide any number that was needed that there was no reason to number them. David wanting to do this showed he had doubt.
4 Joab could not go against the king’s word and had to do it, the sin would be David’s not Joab’s, Joab did what God wanted Joab to do and David did not listen any way.
