Nehemiah 2:13-16 King James Version (KJV)
13 And I went out by night by the gate of the valley, even before the dragon well, and to the dung port, and viewed the walls of Jerusalem, which were broken down, and the gates thereof were consumed with fire.
14 Then I went on to the gate of the fountain, and to the king's pool: but there was no place for the beast that was under me to pass.
15 Then went I up in the night by the brook, and viewed the wall, and turned back, and entered by the gate of the valley, and so returned.
16 And the rulers knew not whither I went, or what I did; neither had I as yet told it to the Jews, nor to the priests, nor to the nobles, nor to the rulers, nor to the rest that did the work.

These are my thoughts, please share yours.
13 The walls had been burned and attacked out of peoples hate for the Lord, they did not want to know He was there because it convicted them about there own gods they were serving, so they tried to remove the reminders which was the walls and gates, they may have destroyed the walls but God is whether people admit it or not.
14 He had to dismount rather then turning back because the route was not what he planned for, often times following the Lord we will be lead to move in ways that we could not plan this does not mean we turn around but we keep going as He leads.
15 So he is seeing what repairs are needed so he can give the king report, he does it by night not because he is ashamed of God’s work but so others don’t prevent the building before it starts, if they would have attacked him here the walls most likely would not have been built. Sometimes while we serve the Lord we use the mind He gave us to serve more effect.
16 He kept things quiet we as Christians should never keep quiet the gospel but there are areas where Christians today are killed and the Lord may have them be quiet to certain groups so they can serve the remnant and be spared during the time they are needed by them.
